The 2019 Brown County Art Gallery's Collectors showcase combined a one-person play titled "A Sitting with Marie: sketches, Memories, and a Pot of Tea" and a great selection of paintings by Marie Goth, V. J. Cariani, Carl Graf and Genevieve Goth Graf. The audience assumes the role of a person sitting for a portrait at Marie's studio. Marie, played by Jill Tasker, talks directly to the audience as she discusses the people in her life that have all passed.She talks about her sister Genevieve, her sister's husband Carl Graf, and the one person in her life she cared so very much about, V. J. Cariani. She tells the story of how she went to New York and studied at the Art Students League and met V. J, who was also a student at the school. Once World War I broke out, Marie returned to Indianapolis, and V. J. went off to the War in France.
Marie and her sister eventually bought a cabin in Nashville, Indiana, to paint the beautiful Brown County landscape and be around other artists. After V. J. returned from the war, he continued to have issues from what had taken place during the war. Marie and Genevieve thought Brown County would be suitable for his recovery, so they Invited V. J. to come to Nashville to visit them. V. J did find solace in Brown County, so much so that he remained in Nashville for the rest of his life living in a cabin next to Marie's.
Jill Tasker put on an excellent performance representing Marie, her life, and the people she loved.
2019 Collectors Showcase of Paintings by Marie Goth, V. J. Cariani, Carl Graf and Genevieve Goth Gaf
The Brown County Art Gallery gathered an excellent selection of artwork by the artists for the public to view. Approximately 53 paintings were on display at this year's showcase. What makes the Collector Showcase a must-see event for those who love Indiana art is the high concentration of works by one or a few artists. Nicely displayed and hung in the gallery, the viewer can move from painting to painting and take as much time enjoying the work by the artist.Other Relevant Links
