Jackson kicked off the 2016 art auction in Indianapolis with a variety of artwork suited for any level of buyer. A very well executed 27 x 24 oil painting by Arnold Turtle with an auction estimate of $6,000 to $12,000 was offered to buyers.  Arnold Turtle (1892-1954) emigrated to the United States from Birmingham, England, and attended the Art Institute of Chicago at night. He became a member of the Chicago Palette and Chisel Club in 1926 and took frequent visits to Brown County, Indiana, to paint the landscape. The painting was signed lower right and sold to the winning bidder for $8,000.

A 14 x 18 oil on canvas painting by Lafayette, Indiana artist Eleanor Brockenbrough (1880 to 1935), received a lot of interest from bidders. Eleanor was born in Lafayette and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. After returning to Lafayette from her studies in Chicago, she became an accomplished painter, winning second prize at the Annual Exhibition of Work of Indiana Artists in 1925. She was also the first woman president of the Lafayette Art Association. The painting signed lower right, and dated 1918 reached a high bid of $3,500.

Robert Grafton (1876 - 1936) was a well-known portrait artist and figure painter that received his education at the Art Institute of Chicago and traveled and painted throughout England, France, and Holland honing his skills. The painting offered for sale was a well-executed figure in a cabin, reminding you why he was selected to paint three Indiana Governors. Warren Terry McCray painted in 1927, Edward L Jackson painted 1927, and Harry Guyer Leslie painted in 1929. Robert made his home in Michigan City, Indiana, traveled extensively and visited New Orleans during the winter between 1914 and 1918. The painting measured 30 x 36 and sold for $3,500.

Offered for sale was a painting by Gordon Benjamin Mess brother of George Joe Mess. The oil on canvas painting depicting a harbor scene measured 20" x 17" was signed lower left and had an auction estimate of $500 - $1000. Gordon was from Indianapolis and studied art at the Herron Art Institute and the Fontainebleau School of Fine Art in France.  He exhibited in France, Philadelphia, and throughout Indiana. He was a member and past president of the Indiana Artists Club. The painting was unable to find a buyer and did not sell.
