Adolph Shulz Painting Reaches $9,500 at first auction of the year.

Indianapolis, In. January 12th, 2014 - The first auction of 2014 contained a wide variety of notable past and present Indiana artists available to the highest bidder.  With 140 lots offered for sale, there were enough variety and price ranges that anyone interested in purchasing had the opportunity to walk out the door with a nice piece of art. The auction was held by Jackson Auction and Real Estate Company at their location in downtown Indianapolis Indiana.

Adolph R. Shulz is considered to be the founder of the Brown County Art Colony. After first visiting the rural area in 1900, he started spending summers there painting until permanently moving to Nashville, In. in 1914.  Adolph studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and with William Merritt Chase at the New York Art Students League. He was one of the founding members that established the Brown County Art Gallery in 1926. An exceptional painting by the artist was one of the centerpieces of the auction and created a lot of interest from several buyers. The oil painting on canvas was titled "The Abandoned Road," measured 30 x 34, was signed lower right, and received a final bid of $9,500.




Ada Walter Shulz, the first wife of Adolph, was friends with the son and daughter of T. C. Steele and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago for 4 years. Ada did not do much painting until 1906 when her family was older, and fewer obligations allowed her to dedicate more time to her art.  Paintings by Ada do not come up for sale often, and when they do, they typically command high prices. Although not reaching the low estimate of $15,000, a painting depicting a landscape with oxen, and possibly Grandma Barnes Cabin, reached a respectable bid of $9,500. The painting was Oil on board, measured 17.5 x 20, and was signed by Ada in the lower left.

George Herbert Baker

George Herbert Baker studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, Boothbay Art School in Maine, and under the Richmond group artist John Elwood Bundy.  He was a charter member and president of the Richmond Palette Club and was known for his landscape paintings in and around Wayne County, Indiana. A 16 x 20  oil on canvas winter scene with stream was offered to bidders who collect his work and received a final bid of $350. Also for sale was a Pastel measuring 8 x 10 and signed lower right, went to the buyer for $150.
