The Brown County Art Gallery kicked off its Paintings for Payments fundraiser with a preview party and sale on Friday, April 16, 2010, benefitting the Brown County Art Gallery Foundation. The show featured the collection of Dr. Merrill Davis. He accepted paintings from the artists as payment for medical services. Dr. Davis was born in 1890 in Miami County, Indiana, and served in WW I as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He attended Harvard Medical School specializing in orthopedics and was the founder of the Davis Clinic in Marion, Indiana. His wife Josephine Davis was involved in many community endeavors, organizing the Marion Municipal Art Association and was later named to the Tri Kappa State Arts Commission. She also helped set up exhibits of Indiana art at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933.
Many art patrons attending the show when the doors opened at 5:00 with several paintings selling within the first 30 minutes. The gallery provided wine and hors d'oeurves in the Henshaw room. Works of art from the Davis collection and art on consignment was for sale. A 22x34 T. C. Steele landscape depicting his house in Brown County with flowers had a price tag of $112,000. There was also a T. C. Steele floral still life measuring 20 x 24 for $56,000. A very nice 28 x 36 oil snow scene with buildings by artist Claude Curry Bohm was on sale for $14,000 with another beautiful Bohm snow scene for $12,000. V. J. Cariani was represented with a 30 x 36 still life of Peonies with an asking price of $12,000.
There were other works on display hand for sale by L. O. Griffith, Anthony Buchta, Genevieve Goth Graf, and John Bundy. The Painting for Payment sale runs through April 18th, 2010
