Wickliff Auction of Fine Art in Indiana

The Wickliff and Associates Auctioneers, Inc. March 20, 2010, auction held in Indianapolis, Indiana, drew both onsite and internet bidders. Artwork from Indiana, Richmond, and Brown County artists were represented as well as other works of art from artists outside of Indiana. Auctioning of the 82 works of art started promptly at 4:00 p.m. At almost every Indiana Art auction, there is a least one painting available for sale by Brown County Artist Claude Curry Bohm, and this auction was no exception.  The winter scene of a few lonely pine trees and drifting snow was not typical of what you would expect from Bohm, but none the less an excellent painting titled “Drifting Snow” measured 30x36, oil on canvas, and SLR,  brought $7,000 to the highest bidder. Several other artists who painted and lived in the Brown County Art Colony were also represented.  A painting by V. J Cariani, who moved to Brown County in 1923 and lived there for the rest of his life, provided interested bidders a choice of several pictures. A 32x36 oil on canvas titled “November in the Hills" signed lower right was purchased for $6,0000. A smaller  7.5 x 9.5 O/C Cariani painting of a summer hillside by a lake was unsigned but had the Marie Goth Estate stamps, sold for $650.

Winter scenes always seem to be popular among collectors, and a lucky bidder walked away with a nice Carl Graf 25x30 Oil on Canvas, signed lower right, and titled “Mid Winter” for $2,500. Representation of the Richmond Group Artists was not absent from the auction. Two beautiful paintings by Homer G. Davission were available to collectors for purchase by the highest bidder. A 25x30 O/C SLL depicting a winter farm scene sold for $7,000 and a lovely Autumn landscape oil on canvas laid on board measuring 24 x 28, SLL sold for $1,750. A painting by Richmond artist Edgar Forkner who was an early member of the Richmond Group was available,, and competitive bidding reflected the interest collectors have in his work. The 36 x 34 oil on canvas SLL depicting boats in the harbor sold for $7,000.
