Fine Art Auction of Past and Present Indiana Artists

Leota Loop Winter Scene
The May Indiana art auction hosted by Jackson Auction in Indianapolis had a variety of paintings for collectors of Indiana art. Leota Loop was a member of the Indiana Artist Club, Hoosier Salon, Kokomo Arts Students League, and the Brown County Art Gallery. She studied under William Forsyth and lived in Kokomo, Indiana, from 1893 to 1938. In 1938 she moved to Nashville, In. and lived there until her death in 1961. For collectors of Leota Loops artwork, there were several paintings offered for sale at the auction. A painting depicting a winter scene with good composition brought $2,500. The painting signed lower right was presented in a Ginney frame and measured 25" x 30". Another painting by Leota was a floral still life measuring 20" x 24" and was signed the lower right corner, which reached a final bid of $600. Also, a small 8" x 9" inch autumn landscape painting depicting a road leading to a cabin in a Ginney frame produced a final bid of $375.

Artist Homer Davisson was born in 1866 in Blountsville, In. and studied art at Depauw University. After several years Homer studied at various places in the United States, including the Art Students League in New York. He spent three years studying in Europe before moving back to Indiana and settling in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Homer was a member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association and exhibited at the Hoosier Salon. A 25" x 30" Oil painting depicting an autumn creek scene went to the highest bidder for $1,700.

Two paintings by the wife of Carl Graf and the sister of Marie Goth were available for purchase. It does not seem like very many Genevieve Goth Graf paintings become available for sale at auction. Genevive was the driving force behind Marie Goths prosperous career as an artist. A teacher for more than forty years, Genevive saved part of her salary to pay expenses for Marie while attending the Arts Student League of New York. She was responsible for Marie moving to Brown County, Indiana, by purchasing property with an old log cabin located on 135. Both paintings offer for sale were still lifes. One oil painting measuring 17" x 20", signed lower right reach $1,000. The other still life measured 16" x 19", signed lower right did not sell.
